Method · Sourcing 101 lineage

A pipeline, not a vibe.

Product Savants runs products through four stages — Ideate, Source, Launch, Scale — with factory-floor discipline at the center. Kill early. Sample hard. Convert only winners.

01

Ideate — product discovery

Start with an item candidate that has economic viability — not a mood board. Write the brief, specification outline, key differentiator, and health & safety flags before any factory conversation. Set kill criteria so mediocre ideas die cheap.

Demand durability Competitive structure Margin model Differentiator design Kill criteria
02

Source — supplier qualification & item selection

The classic Sourcing 101 arc: build a factory prospect list (known suppliers, Alibaba, 1688, agents), prelim-qualify on responsiveness and fit, validate economics (RFQ, MOQ, dimensions, HS code), run due diligence, then sample until a winner earns a master sample.

Prospect list Prelim qualify Economic viability Sample PO → evaluate Convert to item
03

Launch — product introduction

Convert the master sample into channel-ready assets: packaging, listing architecture, creative that works in search and in short-form video, inventory placement, and a launch week plan that matches platform mechanics.

Listing architecture Creative systems Packaging & compliance Inventory placement
04

Scale — expand what works

Winners earn capital and attention. Extend SKUs, open channels (Amazon → TikTok → Shopify → Walmart), tighten ads and organic loops, and install ops systems so volume does not break the business.

Factory pipeline at a glance

Supplier qualification and item selection are separate loops with decision gates. Save-and-disconnect is a valid outcome — most prospects should not become POs.

Economic viability

Reality check before samples

Price / margin RFQ

Challenge the quote against your contribution model after fees, ads, freight, and returns — not just factory FOBs that look cheap on a spreadsheet.

MOQ & MOQ drivers

Know what drives minimums (tooling, colorways, packaging). Negotiate intelligently; do not accept a MOQ that bankrupts the first cycle.

Dimensions & logistics

Size and weight rewrite FBA fees, shelf presence, and TikTok unboxing. Model dimensional weight early.

HS code (HTC)

Tariff and compliance reality. Wrong codes create landed-cost surprises and customs pain. Lock the classification before scale POs.

Sample evaluation

What “winner” actually means

Photos, videos, comments, and test results against the original brief — not vibes from a pretty sample.

Against the brief

  • Key differentiator present and visible
  • Spec tolerances met
  • Health & safety flags cleared
  • Packaging fit for channel

Master sample discipline

  • Initialed master at company HQ
  • Inspector reference copy
  • Supplier-held master
  • Traceable decision record

Apply the method

Bring your candidate. We’ll put it on the pipeline.

Stage it honestly — ideation, sourcing, launch, or scale — and take the next disciplined step.
